Bike to Work Week 2011
Yeh, Bike to Work Week starts this week. It runs from May 30 until June 5. I won't be able to make it to the stations as I work early and they close before I'm off. But I'll be proudly wearing my shirt!

May 28 Market
Another work week has passed and it's time to enjoy another Saturday morning Farmer's Market. The day started with rain, but the sun came out while I was at the Market and is still shining!

Critical Few
Tonight was this Month's Critical Mass. I came just before 5:30pm and no one was there!
But soon enough, 2 people showed up. Jillian, who is the President of the local Cycling club and also runs the upcoming Bike to Work Week. And Arthur, who was here for his first ride.
We rode for about 1/2 hour, and even though there were only 3 of us, we took up a lane. People in cars weren't too excited about that! That's the Rebel side of me. ;)
I don't consider tonight's ride a failure as SOME people did in fact show up! I got to put some of the little adverts that I have laying around on some bike racks, and on bulletin boards before the next ride to give the ride some publicity. Thanks to Jillian and Arthur for making it happen tonight. Hope to see you next month!

Chinlac Hike - Part II
More views from this year's Chinlac hike. Unmarked ones are mine, and I've borrowed with permission, photos taken by Nowell Senior and Gail Hancock who take stunning photos! You can view more photos and a trip report written by the leader, Nowell by visiting http://caledoniaramblers.ca/trip-report-may-22/ .
Chinlac Hike - May 22
Paul and Nowell |
Today we hiked out at Chinlac, which is just northeast of Vanderhoof. In 2005 we were hiking there and a big forest fire erupted while we were enjoying our lunch by the influx of the Stuart and Nechako Rivers. We were a bit scared about it, but I had faith in our experienced leaders.

Hike to Chinlac
Hike at Chinlac today |
I apologize for the delay. I'm surprised that I am writing anything at all right now as we came home later today. I am not as tired as I would be on some Summer hikes in the Mountains.
I will post this as soon as I can. Thanks for your patience!

It's that time of year again
It's time to head out to the Farmer's Market as it is back to being outside again. The weather was nice and Sunny, so it was the perfect day to hang out there. The weather last year at this time wasn't so nice as it snowed!

Rambler's Trainer Primer day
Today I went to the Caledonia Rambler's Trip Leader Primer at the Forests for the World.
It's been at least 6 years since the club has hosted one. We had some guest speakers from Overhang.ca who hosted the interactive part of the day.
For the first few hours we huddled under the shelter at the Forests for the World and listened to various experienced people from the club talk about leading hikes. There were discussions about preparation, what to do at the meetup before the hike, and the different ways to lead a hike.

My Fraser Mtn. Trip report and more photos
I've posted the trip report for the recent hike that I lead on Fraser Mountain on May 8th. There were also quite a few photo submissions from some hikers who were on the trip.
You can view the trip report at http://caledoniaramblers.ca/trip-report-may-8/
You also can view more photos that were submitted by fellow hikers (there were some very good photographs taken) by clicking here.

Fraser Mtn. hike - May 8
On Sunday, May 8, it was my turn to lead a Caledonia Rambler's hike. Despite it being Mother's Day, we had 21 hikers join us for the hike. I was worried that it was too early in the season to do this hike, but it turned out to be the perfect day.

Worst Roads in BC
BCAA has an event going on where you vote for the worst roads in British Columbia.
I voted for Ospika Blvd as it's pretty bad. It's is hard enough for cars to ride on it, but being on a bicycle, it can be dangerous! I try to avoid riding certain sections on it. There are big ruts and big potholes everywhere. I have heard that there is a section where there is a hubcap collection.
They are trying to patch up the potholes, but because it's not warm yet, they can only temp patch it, so it only works for a while. I am not sure if this road was repaved that way, but I heard that one road was repaved used recycled material. If that is the case, they should go back to the drawing board.
Here's a link to the BCAA Worst Roads Campaign where you can vote- BCAA Worst Road Campaigns, vote now!
How bad are the roads in your town?

Summer Bike Tour- should I do it?
Summer is fast approaching! Oh what adventurous thing am I going to do this Summer?
I did Tour De Jasper last year, which was a 392 km bicycle tour. One of the volunteers, Jim, is going to help out with it again this year. After the trip, he is going to bicycle from Jasper to Vancouver. I had contacted him orginally for information about bike touring in California. I would still love to do that one day, but I want to save a little money for now as I might go overseas next year.

Blue Spruce hike - May 1
It's the start of the Hiking Season. There was no break in the Caledonia Rambler's schedule, last weekend it was a snowshoe trip, then it changes over to hiking. I love that!
